Clean energy company, Xebec Adsorption (XBC) has received hydrogen and helium PSA purification orders worth C$6.3 million.

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a technological process in which specific gases are separated from a mixture of gases. The orders are for Xebec’s PSA technology, which can purify the hydrogen and helium generated by some processes and systems.

The company’s technology has been selected for integration into steam methane reforming and electrolysis hydrogen generation systems. Both of these produce hydrogen, which must be purified before it can be used in fuel cell vehicles, and other applications.

Xebec’s PSA platform purifies the hydrogen to an industry standard of 99.99 per cent purity, and produces it more cost-effectively.

The orders came from customers in Canada, the United States, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Italy, and Poland. This cosmopolitan list is indicative of how worldwide adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source is growing.

In the last five weeks alone, numerous government bodies have revealed their strategies for fighting climate change with clean energy.

On June 25, the California Air Resources Board adopted a rule, requiring truck manufacturers to transition from diesel vehicles to battery electric and fuel cell electric ones. The Board plans for every new truck sold in the state of California to be zero-emission by 2045.

On July 7, the European Commission announced its strategy for a climate-neutral Europe. The strategy involves installing electrolysers across the continent, to produce up to 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030.

On July 14, South Korea pledged to invest further in electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Xebec Adsorption’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr Prabhu Rao, commented on the increasing demand for the company’s technology.

“Xebec is in a unique position with our PSA platform, because it can be used in all hydrogen generation systems. Hydrogen comes out of steam methane reformers or electrolysers with impurities that need to be removed in order to achieve a desired quality.

“We’ve been developing our purification technology for decades, and it is a tried and tested solution that can be applied to everything from helium, renewable natural gas, and hydrogen.

“It’s exciting to see our Cleantech systems order flow pick up as we continue to grapple with the need to decarbonise and fight climate change,” he said.

Xebec Adsorption (XBC) is up 3.71 per cent and is trading at $4.19 per share at 1:02pm EDT.
