Volt (VCT) has built the first batch of its 8-layer lithium-ion batteries.

The batteries come in the form of pouch cells using NMC811 cathode chemistry paired with a graphite anode.

NMC811 chemistry is one of the most advanced formulations of nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes available on the market to develop lithium-ion batteries. It is currently being considered as an alternative to scale up several electric vehicle platforms.

The company’s Solid Ultrabattery division oversaw construction from its R&D facility in Guelph, Ontario.

Preliminary internal test results of 30 charge/discharge cycles for the pouch cells are depicted below.

The following figure depicts internal test results of the charge/discharge cycle with respect to voltage and capacity and provides a preliminary indication that the pouch cells are performing as expected for this type of chemistry.

The company will continue pouch cell cycle testing until performance can be quantified over a substantially higher number of cycles and charge/discharge rates. It remains focused on validating its solid electrolyte battery technology for commercialization.

“I am pleased to see the preliminary test results of our first 8-layer pouch cells,” stated V-Bond Lee, Volt’s CTO. “This is a good precursor to building our solid electrolyte batteries later this year, which are fabricated with similar processes.”

Volt (VCT) is unchanged trading at $0.11 per share as of 9:46 am EST.
