VERSES AI Inc. (NEO:VERS) has dug deeper into explainable artificial intelligence with a landmark research paper.

Titled “Designing Explainable Artificial Intelligence with Active Inference: A framework for interpretability based on the study of introspection and decision-making,” the paper explains methods for developing explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) systems that can be used by people.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based tech company believes this could offer new possibilities for transparency and understanding of artificial intelligence processing.

The lead author of the research paper, VERSES’ Director of Product, Mahault Albarracin, commented, “Our research demonstrates the exciting potential of active inference for designing AI systems that are both capable of making complex decisions and explaining their reasoning in a way that humans can understand. This represents a significant step forward in building trust and accountability in AI.”

VERSES’ Director of Research, Maxwell Ramstead added that the ability for artificial intelligence to explain its decision-making process is crucial for building trust and understanding amongst end users.

“Our proposed framework takes an important step in this direction, potentially revolutionizing how we view and interact with AI.”

The authors say that their proposed architecture would enable artificial intelligence systems to track and explain factors contributing to their decisions that could be further scaled up utilizing open standards for knowledge modeling. This new approach to artificial intelligence transparency aligns with growing demands from regulators, policymakers, and human interest groups for artificial intelligence systems to be more interpretable for users.

VERSES is a cognitive computing company specializing in next-generation artificial intelligence. Its flagship offering, GIA, is an intelligent agent for anyone powered by KOSM, a network operating system enabling distributed intelligence, scheduled for release later this year. This week, the company announced its collaboration with Dentons US and the Spatial Web Foundation to provide an in-depth analysis of the legal and key legislative trends from across the world on the state of AI regulation and recommendations for a path forward for government regulation of AI.
