UGE (UGE) has deployed eight microgrid systems in New York City as part of a hurricane energy resiliency program.

The microgrids utilize LFP batteries from SimpliPhi Power, natural gas generators and rooftop solar installations to store renewable energy, enabling critical backup power during utility service interruptions.

The program is part of the city’s RISE:NYC portfolio, which was developed in response to Hurricane Sandy-related outages with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused US$19 billion in losses and left more than 2.2 million people without electricity.

The eight sites included in the portfolio are in Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Rockaways in Queens.

Mateo Chaskel, UGE’s Managing Director, stated,

“Hurricane Sandy gave New Yorkers a glimpse of the impact that climate change can have on businesses, residents and our electric grid, and recent devastation from Hurricane Ida shows us that we all need to be prepared.

UGE is proud to be providing renewable energy microgrid systems that can provide off-grid clean power when the grid is put at risk by storms and uncertain climate.”

Chris Keast, SimpliPhi Power’s Sales Application Engineer, added,

“These projects are a great step forward in the shift to decentralized renewable energy, leading the way in providing resilience to communities vulnerable to climate change.”

UGE develops, owns and operates commercial and community solar projects in the U.S. and strategic markets abroad.

UGE (UGE) is unchanged trading at $1.70 per share as of 10:07 am ET.
