Centerra Gold (TSX: CG) has reported another fatality at the Kumtor gold mine in the Kyrgyz Republic.

On February 11th, a worker was killed while operating an excavator. The machine, with the worker inside, tipped over and slipped into a water-filled basin on the mine site.

After search and recovery efforts concluded, it was confirmed that the individual had died as a result of the incident.

Kumtor’s management team and government regulators have begun internal investigation to discover the cause of the accident.

Centerra has not yet said whether this event will affect operations at the mine.

This is the the third death on site in the last three months.

Last December, Centerra reported two employees were missing after a severe rockslide occurred at the site’s waste rock dump.

Over the next six weeks, Centerra halted its operations at the open-pit mine, while a search and rescue team worked.

No bodies were ever recovered and the two individuals are presumed dead. Operations the mine were recommenced in the middle of last month.

During that period the company’s share price fell 16 per cent.

In Centerra’s 2019 financial report, released last week, President and CEO Scott had assured the public that the company was making an effort to improve safety

“In early January we held our first annual Centerra Gold Safety Week. The entire leadership team including myself travelled to all our sites for a one-day operations stand down to focus on safety at each site.”

Centerra Gold Inc (CG) was up 3.44 per cent, with shares currently trading C$10.16.
