For the fourth straight session, Canada’s main stock index closed higher for its best weekly gain since early June. Friday’s jump was supported by expectations of smaller interest rate hikes from the U.S. Energy and tech shares were down and the mining sector posted another day in the red.

Wall Street stocks saw a mixed performance in a shortened trading session during the Thanksgiving break with all eyes on retailers as the holiday shopping season kicks off.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.72 cents US, compared to 74.97 cents US on Thursday.

US crude futures traded $1.39 lower at $76.55 a barrel, while the Brent contract lost $1.31 to $84.03 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US$0.87 to US$1,754.60.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 100.06 points to 28,283.03, the Hang Seng was down 87.32 points to 17,573.58, the FTSE was up 20.07 points to 7,486.67, and the DAX was up 1.82 point to 14,541.38.
