Canada’s main stock index followed global markets to close lower on Thursday. A wide decline was led by losses in the technology and industrial sectors while the energy sector was the only market to see gains.

U.S. stock markets also fell following a lacklustre economic data report, and hawkish commentary from Federal Reserve policymakers sparked new recession worries among traders.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.32 cents US, compared to 74.09 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded $0.96 higher at $80.44 a barrel, and the Brent contract gained $1.28 to $86.26 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$25.21 to US$1,932.35.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 385.89 points to 26,405.23, the Hang Seng was down 27.02 points to 21,650.98, the FTSE was down 83.41 points to 7,747.29, and the DAX was down 261.44 points to 14,920.36.
