Global design firm Stantec (STN) is participating in a 10-year study funded by the US government to explore the Arctic.
Stantec will support applied science giant Battelle, which will conduct a series of research projects in the remote regions of the northern Americas.
The US government contract was awarded by the National Science Foundation and is valued at approximately C$342 million. The company will provide infrastructure and logistics support to academic researchers working across Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, and other Arctic areas.
Toward this end, Stantec will design, engineer and plan services to shore up the project’s new facilities against the harsh weather and difficult conditions in the deep north.
While contending with the region’s confronting terrain, Stantec has also committed to working closely with indigenous communities in the Arctic, to ensure the proper cultural and the environmental research practices.
Chris Brown, Stantec’s Vice President based in Anchorage said the company was thrilled to work with the Battelle team to support the National Science Foundation on this important and innovative program.
“We have a long history of supporting Indigenous communities and extensive experience designing facilities across the Arctic.
“Our team understands the variables that must be considered to deliver critical infrastructure in the world’s most challenging locations, and we look forward to building on that history to help facilitate essential Arctic research,” he said.
This news follows a string of US-related news from Stantec, including the recent signing of five-year deal with the Corps of Engineers valued at C$45 million.
Stantec (STN) is down 0.79 per cent and is trading at $41.55 per share at 2:19pm EDT.
