SHARC International Systems (SHRC) is advancing plans to apply its wastewater energy recovery technology to the King County sewer system.

King County is a county located within the US state of Washington, and contains the state capital of Seattle. In addition to being the most populated county in Washington, it is also the twelfth most populated county in the United States.

On September 15, the County Council unanimously approved legislation which would allow three wastewater heat recovery projects. As such, the county provided the opportunity for public consultation regarding development of a template contract to be used for agreements with private parties for sewer heat recovery.

SHARC Energy took part in this opportunity, and has since had its wastewater energy recovery system accepted by a US national developer. The developer in question has a Seattle project which could potentially be one of the county’s three wastewater projects.

SHARC Energy’s CEO, Lynn Mueller, commented on the significance of King County’s Sewer Heat Recovery program.

“This is one of the most ambitious wastewater recovery initiatives in North America and we are delighted to see King County take a leadership role in recovering the energy that goes down the drain every minute of every day in buildings across the United States and around the world,” he said.

“SHARC Energy’s wastewater recovery systems, now successfully operating in Canada – the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom – reduce the use of fossil fuels for heating and cooling, and that means energy savings and dramatic reductions in GHG emissions to help residents, property owners, and governments meet vital decarbonisation targets,” he added.

SHARC International Systems is up 9.84 per cent and is trading for C$0.34 per share, as of 11:57am EST.
