NEO Battery Minerals (NBM) has created a new method of using modified carbon nanotubes to manufacture silicon anode materials.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as a replacement for copper in silicon anode batteries. Unlike traditional carbon fibres, which easily, CNTs maintain their structure up to a 15 per cent stretching level.

The material is as conductive as copper and theoretically 100 times stronger than steel, reported the company.

Despite the material’s “excellent electrical conductivity,” it also lacks an affinity to silicon particles, making mixing the two materials difficult.

NEO Battery Materials has secured technology that treats the surface of CNTs, making them an effective material for NEO’s silicon nanocoating technology.

“We are at a critical stage of scaling up NEO’s proprietary nanocoating technology to mass-produce low-cost and reliable silicon anodes,” remarked NEO’s president and CEO Spencer Huh.

Batteries made with the new CNT method displayed a dramatically improved life span than those with conventional CNTs.

The company has appointed Dr. Min Kim as its senior research engineer to head the development of NEO’s silicon anodes for mass production.

“Dr. Min Kim will be an invaluable asset to the current scientific team and will help NEO accelerate its commercialization target,” said Mr. Huh.

NEO Battery Materials Ltd. is a Vancouver-based resource company focused on battery metals and materials.

NEO Battery Materials Ltd. (NBM) is up 3.70 per cent, trading at $0.84 per share as of 1:08 pm ET.
