HPQ Silicon’s (HPQ) Quartz Reduction Reactor pilot plant is now ready to process material.

The GEN3 PUREVAP Quartz Reduction Reactor seeks to transform quartz into high-purity silicon through the continuous operation of a plasma arc furnace under vacuum. The process promises reduced costs and carbon emissions compared to existing technology.

The news follows a successful high-temperature dynamic test by technology provider, PyroGenesis (PYR), in which all key steps required to make silicon were tested. The system also demonstrated the capability to maintain an inert state for the duration of the test.

The pilot plant will produce approximately 2,500 times more product than GEN2, which bodes well for commercial viability.

The next step in process improvement tests involves introducing a mixture of quartz and reductant to initiate the production of silicon by carbothermic reduction.

“The results obtained during the 72-hour dynamic blank test are a major engineering milestone and accomplishment for the PyroGenesis team,” stated Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicon.
