Great Canadian Gaming (TSX:GC) has announced a temporary suspension of all gaming facilities in key provinces.

From Monday, March 16, all outlets owned by the company in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will be closed.

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on March 9, and companies are now taking preventative measures in order to curb the spread.

Great Canadian Gaming says that its decision to suspend operations was made in conjunction with relevant lottery corporations. A key factor, it added, was the significant numbers of people that congregate at these venues.

Rod Baker, CEO of Great Canadian Gaming, confirmed that the company is committed to providing a safe environment for all its guests and staff.

“On behalf of our 10,000 team members across the country, and the millions of guests we have the privilege of hosting and entertaining each year, we know we have a role to play in the fight to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

“We are taking this unprecedented and proactive step along with the countless other organizations across the country that are taking similar action to collectively contain the spread of COVID-19,” he said.

While Great Canadian Gaming has reported no cases of virus infection from either guests or staff members, it’s not known how long the closures will last.

The company says that it will continue to review the COVID-19 situation and will provide updates to the market as they come to hand.

Great Canadian Gaming (GC) is currently down 16.75 per cent to C$24.16 per share, as of 1:15pm EST.
