First Hydrogen (FHYD) has unveiled its inaugural hydrogen fuel cell-powered van.

The van employs a fuel stack supplied by Ballard Power Systems and has over five times more range than its battery electric equivalent, achieving 400-600 km on a single fueling.

Refuelling time is approximately five minutes, far undercutting the over 5 hours it takes to recharge a battery electric van.

The green hydrogen van has commenced performance tests at the HORIBA MIRA Proving Ground near Birmingham, U.K. The news follows the vehicle’s certification for U.K. road use last month.

Fleet operator trials are slated for the new year.

First Hydrogen intends to undertake future vehicle trials in the E.U., U.S. and Canada as it develops its next generation of vehicles over the next few years.

The company believes its vehicles, together with its Hydrogen-as-a-Service solution, which supplies green hydrogen fuel, distribution and vehicle management services, will help the sector meet zero-emission targets.

“The team has been working tirelessly to reach this monumental achievement. It has been phenomenal to watch the performance on the test track and really bring our vision into reality,” stated Steve Gill, CEO of Automotive for First Hydrogen. “These vehicles enable us to demonstrate how hydrogen fuel cell systems can serve the light commercial vehicle market, delivering the range and providing the operational flexibility commercial fleets require.”

First Hydrogen is focused on zero-emission vehicles, green hydrogen production and distribution and supercritical carbon dioxide extractor systems.

First Hydrogen (FHYD) is up by 2.01 per cent, trading at $4.06 per share as of 10:31 am ET.
