Dehydration tech company EnWave (ENW) has signed two agreements with US-based ramen noodle manufacturer, Nippon Trends Food Services.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, Nippon has operations in both the United States and in Canada. The company manufactures ramen noodles under its Yamachan Ramen brand, as well as udon and Japanese-style gyoza products.

Nippon has been conducting an in-depth evaluation of EnWave’s Radiant Energy Vacuum (EV) dehydration technology. During this evaluation, the companies developed a process for dehydrating fresh ramen noodles, which can rehydrate back to fresh quality.

Under a royalty-bearing commercial license agreement, Nippon intends to commercialise this application of the REV technology.

Nippon has also signed an equipment purchase agreement with EnWave, for the purchase of a 10 kilowatt REV machine. The REV machine will be installed in Canada, in order to initiate commercial production at the company’s Canadian operations.

Nippon’s commercial license from EnWave gives the ramen business exclusive rights to process ramen noodles in Canada using REV technology.

As part of the agreements, Nippon is obligated to buy a large-scale REV machine with at least 100 kilowatts of power. In order to retain its exclusivity rights, the company must make this second equipment purchase within a year of the first REV machine’s commissioning.

This is the first time that EnWave has granted a license giving the right to manufacture noodles using REV technology. The company believes that this represents yet another area within the food dehydration sector where its solutions may have significant potential for applications.

EnWave is up 11.32 per cent and is trading for C$1.18 per share, as of 10:08am EST.
