General Motors (GM) confirmed Wednesday will wrap up production of the current edition of the Chevrolet Camaro.

The Detroit automaker said the final cars will be produced in January 2024, becoming the final model year for the vehicle’s sixth edition.

The current edition of the classic sports comes with a V8 engine and 650 horsepower, giving it the fastest time for any Camaro around GM’s road course at the company’s proving ground in Michigan.

Without specifying, General Motors did say this will “not be the end” for the Camaro, which was first introduced to car buyers in 1966 at the height of the muscle car era.

A Collector’s Edition package will be available closer to the start of orders this summer.

General Motors discontinued the Camaro in 2002 before reviving the iconic coup in 2010.

“As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan,” vice president of Global Chevrolet Scott Bell said in a statement.

“While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

General Motors started the current sixth generation of the Camaro in 2016.

The move comes as car and truck makers increasingly move away from performance-style gas-powered vehicles and towards electric vehicles. Chevrolet did not make any indication the Camaro would ever be available as an EV.

The company’s stock dipped slightly after the news.

General Motors (GM) is down 0.36 percent, trading at US$34.96 at 2:41 p.m. ET
