Cannabix Technologies (CSE:BLO) has submitted a patent for its breath collection unit (BCU) technology that can detect THC in samples.

In a news release, the company said the patent application includes innovation and intellectual property related to the development of detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile substances such as delta-9 THC using the BCU device.

Delta-9 THC is the component in cannabis that causes impairment.

According to Cannabix Technologies, the patent application covers a range of methods for collecting analytes of low volatility from human breath.

This includes liquid secondary adsorption, the concept behind the company’s mass spectrometer breath sampler (MSBS), which has historically effectively captured and released demonstrated THC.

“We have been steadily growing and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio in the arena of breath testing – this is a testament to the ability of Cannabix engineers to innovate,” Rav Mlait, CEO of the company, said in a statement. “Our BCU and MSBS hardware continues to show very good sensitivity due to the ability to effectively collect and desorb breath samples containing non-volatiles like delta-9 THC.”

Breath samples collected with the BCU have been able to accurately detect and confirm detected delta-9 THC in breath up to four hours after smoking.

Cannabix Technologies develops marijuana and alcohol breathalyzer technologies for law enforcement, workplaces and laboratories.

Shares of Cannabix Technologies are down 1.89 per cent to C$0.26 as of 10:01 a.m. ET.
