Baylin Technologies (TSX:BYL) has been deemed an “essential service” in both Canada and the US.

As a result, the technology company will stay open for business, while many others close in temporary, government-mandated shutdowns.

It is likely that Baylin qualifies because of the myriad services and products that its subsidiaries provide in North America.

The company has two manufacturing subsidiaries based in Quebec, Advantech Wireless Technologies and Alga Microwave. Quebec’s government has classified them both as essential businesses, which can remain open despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Advantech and Alga both supply products to government agencies, military companies, leading North American global communication companies, and NATO countries.

Furthermore, products from the Quebec factory are vital to critical infrastructure viability in various industries, including defense, media, and telecommunications.

Specifically, the products are essential to the CBC, a North American Tier 1 network carrier, a national cable news network, and early warning radar systems. Products also go to leading global companies in information and communication technology, and strategic global infrastructure.

In Arizona, USA, Baylin also has a subsidiary called Galtronics USA. Galtronics’ antennas support a US public safety network, which ensures that 911 communications, public messaging, and first responders stay functional.

The company has received two separate designations, asserting its necessity during the COVID-19 crisis.

A leading Tier 1 network carrier called Galtronics “the provider of an essential critical service”. A leading global aerospace and defense technology company called Galtronics “an essential manufacturing supplier of critical components” for the US Department of Defense.

Baylin’s operations in China are continuing to improve, as the COVID-19 virus starts to subside there. All employees have now returned to work, allowing operations to return to full capacity.

While the essential service designation ensures the continuing employment of Baylin’s workers, the threat of COVID-19 is still present. As such, the company has implemented various preventative measures to reduce the spread in its offices and manufacturing facilities.

Where possible, employees are working from home, and self-isolating if necessary. They are also adhering to bans on travel.

In the company’s facilities, additional measures include intensified cleaning and hygiene practices. Employees are social distancing, having their temperatures taken, and using the masks that are available to them.

Baylin’s share price is up 12.50 per cent, and trading at $0.90 per share, as of 3:42pm EST.
