Air Canada (AC) has agreed to purchase 30 ES-30 electric aircraft from Sweden’s Heart Aerospace.

Heart’s mission is to create the world’s greenest, most affordable and most accessible form of transport with a focus on regional electric air travel.

The ES-30, expected to enter service in 2028, will generate zero emissions while flying on lithium-ion battery power. It will also be equipped with reserve-hybrid generators that can use sustainable aviation fuel.

The aircraft will carry 25-30 passengers between 200-800 km per flight with a charging time of between 30-50 minutes.

Under the agreement, Air Canada has acquired a US$5 million equity stake in Heart Aerospace.

“Air Canada has taken a leadership position in the industry to address climate change. The introduction into our fleet of the ES-30 electric regional aircraft from Heart Aerospace will be a step forward to our goal of net zero emissions by 2050,” said Michael Rousseau, President and CEO of Air Canada.

“Already, Air Canada is supporting the development of new technologies, such as sustainable aviation fuels and carbon capture, to address climate change,” he added. “We are now reinforcing our commitment by investing in revolutionary electric aircraft technology.”

“Air Canada is a strategically important partner for Heart Aerospace. The company has one of the world’s largest networks operated by regional turboprops. It is also a progressive, future-leaning company, especially in the green transition,” added Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace.

Air Canada is Canada’s largest airline serving almost 200 airports worldwide.

Air Canada (AC) is up by 2.78 per cent, trading at $19.24 per share as of 10:14 am EST.
